A simple square vase, rectangle vase or round cylinder will work for this type of arrangement.  I'm going to fill it with florist foam because it holds bulky christmas evergreens in place and gives them a continual source of water.

Different vases are different sizes.  If I want to fill a vase completely, I place the glass on top of the foam and press down lightly to score the foam.

Imprinting the outline of the glass onto the foam gives you an easy cutting guide.

Use a broad flat knife to carefully cut the foam into the right size.  Use a cutting board to protect countertops from sharp edges.
