The stems don't have to be perfect, but you do have to take care that every cut stem is under water, otherwise it won't last without water.

Insert occasionally between the "holes" created by the other flowers. Work the stems gently in between the others. Slip the shortest stems on the sides, under the heads of the first flower insertions.
